What We Do

• There is no specific trademark law presently in the Maldives.
• Any company wishing to register their trademark (with the Ministry of Economic Development) must be registered for business in the Maldives.
• A company registered in the Maldives may register a trademark for a maximum period of 5 (five) years, and a minimum period of 1 (one) month.
• Please note that a registration fee of MVR 50 (approx. US$ 3.20) is applicable per month of registration. A Government revenue stamp of MVR 100 (approx. US$ 6.50) is applicable when submitting the registration.
• Please also note that there is no trademark classification system in the Maldives, therefore once registered, the mark is protected in respect of all classes.

A company not registered for business in the Maldives may obtain limited protection by periodically publishing Cautionary Notices in the local newspapers preferably in both English and local Dhivehi languages. The Cautionary Notice serves as a notice on the public that the particular trademark belongs to the particular entity.

• Drafting the cautionary notice in both English and Dhivehi (the local language).
• Liaising with newspaper publishers to finalize the layout and placing the notice in the paper.
• Please do note that our legal fees do not include the costs of placing the cautionary notice in the papers, and the courier charges to deliver the original newspaper to the client. The actual cost of placing a notice depends on the size of the notice. (A typical notice costs between US$ 100 to US$ 250, depending on online or print publication and length of the matter).
• We assure our promote and most cost-effective solution in publication of Cautionary Notices. We will provide you estimate of cost for each matter before publishing.
• Usually such Cautionary Notice are being published at an interval of every 3 years of last publication.
